Gum disease can present itself without pain so it is important to recognize other possible symptoms that occur. Gum disease is caused by bacteria left in your mouth. Be sure to maintain regular visits to your dentist as well as a proper daily hygiene routine to prevent the onset of gum disease. Get a gum disease treatment plan here.
Bleeding : Just like in any other part of our bodies, bleeding is not a good sign. If you are noticing blood while you are brushing your teeth, it could be a sign of gum disease. If you maintain a healthy dental health regimen (brushing at least twice a day for two minutes and flossing), then you should not be experiencing any gum bleeding. Do not take it as just a sign of a rigorous brushing! Book an appointment with your dentist to see what the issue it.
Soreness : It often presents itself locally as soreness or inflammation. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should discuss them with your dentist immediately as gum disease can increase your chances or be a precursor to heart disease and diabetes.
Shifting Teeth/Gums: If your teeth seem to shift in your mouth or seem loose, you might have gum disease. Periodontitis will attack the bone that keeps your teeth in place. Your teeth might even appear to have grown! This means your gums are shrinking; a serious side effect.
Sensitive Teeth: Before you just go to the store and buy toothpaste for sensitive teeth, first consider WHY your teeth are suddenly more sensitive! Sensitivity is a symptom so make sure you discuss any personal changes in oral sensitivity with your dentist.
Bad Breath: Bacteria trapped in your gums can release toxins that create bad breath. If you or others around you are noticing a negative change in your breath, check with a dentist.
Gum disease is a very serious health issue that should be treated immediately. It can increase your chances of heart disease, diabetes and other serious health problems due to you being more susceptible to infections. Discuss a treatment plan with your dentist right away. At Providence Prosthodontics in Orange, California, we specialize in treating gum disease. If you have any questions or concerns about gum disease or anything dental hygiene related, call our expert doctors today to schedule a consult at (714) 771-7555.
Most people occasionally clench or grind their teeth (medically known as Bruxism) due to stress, but extensive teeth grinding or clenching can have major effects on your dental health. We have comprehensive teeth grinding treatment plans if you experience these symptoms.
But what causes a pattern of teeth grinding?
The number one cause of teeth grinding is severe stress and anxiety. When dealing with high stress, people tend to clench their jaws or grind their teeth without realizing it as a way of coping. This commonly occurs while driving in a precarious situation, or similar situations. People with this issue tend to experience stress during sleep also so they end up putting their jaw muscles in an over-active mode of mastication.
Teeth grinding can also be a side-effect of certain medications. It is most common among someone who uses antidepressants, antipsychotic and psychotic drugs. If you find yourself having this issue, ask your doctor about what your options are before you cause irreversible damage to your teeth.
If you have any sleep issues or sleep disorders, it can be related to teeth grinding also. Someone who doesn’t sleep well can become more prone to developing this habit.
Excessive smoking, drinking a lot of caffeinated drinks, alcoholism, and the use of recreational drugs can also create a habit of teeth grinding or clenching.
When a person loses a tooth or few of them, some changes occur in the bite and mouth. Other teeth migrate toward this empty space in the mouth and causes bite misalignments. Because of that, joints of the jaw loses its control of the movements and it is believed that it causes teeth grinding. Or the constant moving of your jaw, as your tongue feels the new changes can mimic teeth grinding and cause dental health issues such as an inflamed jaw.
If you suffer from Dementia, Parkinson Syndrome, Mental Diseases, Epilepsy, Sleep Apnea, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, there is a high possibility that you will suffer from teeth grinding also.
With time, if the teeth grinding is left untreated, it can result in tooth loss, teeth loosening, and fracturing. You will also experience pain or inflammation. Teeth can also wear down and lose their vertical height, so you might require additional restorations like dentures, crowns, bridges or dental implants. Moreover, it can cause TMJ/TMD. In that case, some changes in your face might appear also. What is more, it is not unusual that you will experience severe jaw and facial pain and have tension-type headaches.
Getting to know the root of the problem allows you to get better results in eliminating the problem. Visit us at Providence Prosthodontics Dental Group to get your consultation with our highly-qualified specialists, who will help you to get rid of this teeth-damaging habit using various methods and techniques. Regular dental checkups allow you and your dentist to stay ahead of dental problems, like tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease and even oral cancer. The earlier your dentist diagnoses a problem the easier and less expensive it is to treat.
A professional dental cleaning is essential! As it is the only way to effectively remove tartar (hardened plaque). Tartar contains cavity-causing bacteria. Although, brushing and flossing regularly is mandatory to maintain a healthy smile, it is not sufficient alone. Tartar grips to your teeth and requires a professional to remove it.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons to invest in regular dental exams and cleanings is that it has a positive impact on your overall health. Recent studies have shown that there’s a link between periodontal disease and heart disease; when the former is present, the latter is twice as likely.
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, gum disease can have a domino effect on your health. The bacteria caused by periodontal disease can enter your bloodstream and attach to your heart’s blood vessels, causing them to swell. Inflammation, or swelling leads to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries and places you at a greater risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke.
Regular checkups and cleanings are not only preventative, they are an investment in your health and well-being.

Here at Providence Prosthodontics Dental Group we care deeply about each of you and have worked diligently to ensure that our office and staff have been properly outfitted and trained so that you and your family will remain safe when visiting our office. Under the guidance of the California Department of Public Health, a letter to California Dental Healthcare Personnel was delivered on May 7th, 2020. The letter provided guidance for resuming deferred and preventive dental care. Although we have always met or exceeded guidelines published by OSHA and the CDC the new guidelines have required that we adopt newer standards for the prevention of transmissible disease.
We have procured Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including N95 masks, surgical scrubs, disposable paper gowns, and have installed physical barriers for your safety. Additionally, we further trained our staff on the standardized use of this equipment including the use of sanitization fogger protocols that add an additional layer of cleanliness and security.
Again, your health and well-being continue to be our highest priority. The measures we will be taking to provide a safe dental treatment experience include, but are not limited to, the following:
In addition to these standard measures, we will be exercising a higher than normal level of infection-control and social distancing for the foreseeable future. While we adore and value each of our patients, handshakes and hugs are no longer appropriate and may be replaced with a bow, wave, or possibly an “elbow bump” for the time being.
While we are doing everything in our power to protect you, we also ask for your cooperation in making our office environment a safe one when you visit us. If you have a cough, fever, or chills, please call our office to discuss when you should reschedule. We will be checking temperatures on all patients as they enter the office and anyone with a reading over 99.9 degrees will be asked to reschedule at least three weeks later as a precaution.
Should you wish to discuss your future dental care or have any questions about treatment and whether you should schedule an appointment, please do not hesitate to call us at 714-771-7555. We will provide personalized conversations regarding your individual dental needs and will review with you in detail our infectious disease/COVID 19 control procedures.
